Joanna transferred to Monash University on exchange from America and hopelessly tried to cook dinner for one. After socialising with mutual friends, and sick of eating peanut butter and jelly sandwiches for dinner every night, Joseph won Joanna’s heart with his delicious home cooked meals. Six months later Joanna returned to America, and Joseph followed shortly after on his own exchange program, but in a different state. “We decided that we would do whatever it took to make our relationship work, no matter what city, state, country, or even hemisphere we were in,” says Joanna.
The bride: Joanna Clare Hurley, 25, project coordinator
The groom: Joseph Egan Cleary, 24, mechanical engineer
The date: 20 March
A generous Christmas gift of frequent flyer points was given to Joanna by one of her colleagues so that she could visit Joseph in Australia. While taking a walk on ANZAC day Joanna stopped to rest on a log. Just as she sat down Joseph got down on one knee and asked her to marry him. That night they shared the news with at a family celebration.
