Our Wedding Day...Can I Use The Word Perfect?

Kate & Eben arrived back in Sydney today as husband and wife. Before jetting off to South America for their honeymoon Kate has written about her perfectly flowing and colourful wedding day.

Our Wedding Day...Can I Use The Word Perfect?

Some people describe their weddings going at warp speed. Some complain they had moments that dragged. Others claim they didn't want the event to end. Others still rue the length of certain moments. Our day, I am so relieved to say, really just flowed. It moved at a beautiful pace and the day was not over before it began, and we were lucky enough to roll with that flow enjoying every second and every person involved.

In so many ways we were blessed. The site was so much greener than I recalled as vivid plant life had burst forth for summer. The request that guests wear summer garden party attire resulted in even more spectacular colour, and my sister and our friend Jackie had draped the trees down the bridal path with bouquets.

Walking down what some people christened "the Hessian Highway" (a path cut from burlap) with my Dad I started to shake inside but there was Eben waiting with a glass of champagne and we broke with tradition and spent half an hour mingling with friends and family so at the point of actually getting married all my nerves had dissolved. I think my best advice for a new bride is to try this ‘break in’ ritual, and mix with people you love for a few moments before taking to the altar. It's the moment you'll realize there is nothing to be afraid of and everyone is there supporting and loving you. The key to enjoying yourself is knowing that you can slow down and really doing that.

A lot of people have asked how I felt right at the moment of exchanging vows with Eben and the only word I can think of is HAPPY. Smiling ear to ear. When the ceremony started I sang to him the song "Electric Dreams". In a way it said all I needed to say as my speech (typically) was very short. As I think I had hinted in previous blogs Eben had a surprise up his sleeve for his speech and boy was it a doozy.  I'll save the details for my next blog as it really deserves it's own special corner in wedding history. It was thoughtful, well timed and hilarious. Just like Eb. OK, I'll give you a hint....the word medley has something to do with it. Right now we are doing the final packing for the honeymoon, when I gather myself up I'll share Eben's hat trick with you. It's nothing I've ever seen at a wedding before and perhaps, it will never be witnessed again!
